There are multiple debates regarding the cause of our universe. In my research I focused specifically on an atheist view, believing that the Big Bang theory is true, but that it was caused by natural forces. The opposing argument being, the theist view that the Big Bang also occurred, but it was caused by an intelligent Designer.
There are so many different questions, each leading to a new question, which made it hard to narrow my research. I wanted to begin with the atheist side of the argument, since that’s what I knew least about. It was rather difficult to find hard evidence, such as a theory or law, proving that we are only here due to natural forces. From what I knew, that meant that the universe just happened at random chances. That around 13.7 billion years ago, there was the universe, in one single point. This point, being smaller the size of a pinhead;
a point where all space, time, and matter were in one. Then an explosion caused this point to expand. This was the foundation of the universe, but it is unknown what was before the Big Bang. And that is where the controversy begins, what caused that explosion?
• The truth is, we don’t know. We don’t know what caused the explosion that caused our expanding universe.
• In some cases atheists use a multiple universe theory
-Dr. Peter Atkins in his book, The Creation Revisited wrote, “Now, we go back in time beyond the moment of creation to where there was no time, and to where there was no space.” He goes on to say that in the time before time he imagines a “swirling dust of mathematical points which recombine again and again and again and finally come by trial and error to form our space time universe.”
-more specifically the multiple universe theory states that there are actually an infinite number of universes in existence, and by chance our universe exploded with the right conditions to create an earth that supports human life
-yet I could not find any evidence supporting this theory
-Times Magazine wrote an article on scientists finding other galaxies within our universe that were created in the infancy of the universe. This challenges the theory of cold, dark matter taking billion of years to form galaxies.
- even science is constantly observing and renewing theories as technology enhances
• Another argument I found was that since there was no time before the big bang, there was no time for anything to be.
-St. Augustine of Hippo stated that the world was made “not in time, but simultaneously with time.”
-therefore, why is it weird that our universe just randomly burst into being. With the support of quantum physics it is normal for matter such as atoms and molecules to spontaneously come into and out of existence.
