Some More US History

I'm currently in a American History phase, where this stuff is REALLY interesting! So thats why this weeks blogs have been about it. Heres another story on President Adams election. I try to write these from a different point of view to make them more interesting to read.

Its over! At last this nation’s sixth president has been chosen. After many long days, and taking this election to the House of Representatives, the results are in! How do you like the title of President John Quincy Adams?

This may be unexpected, but the House knows what they are doing. As a matter of fact, it was quite the close call. Out of ten candidates, the House was able to narrow it done to three, this included Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and William Harris Crawford. Jackson was in the lead for both popular and electoral votes, with 151,271 popular votes (43%) and 99 electoral votes. But, this didn’t cut it; he needed 32 more electoral votes to gain the majority. Adams had 113,122 popular votes and 84 electoral, putting him in second. Finally Crawford had 40,856 popular votes with 41 electoral, making him third.

Since Andrew Jackson was not able to gain the majority of electoral votes, it was up to the House of Representatives to choose America’s future leader. Now, Clay was in fourth place in the electoral election, so he was no longer in the race, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t have a say in who was going to win.

Supposedly Clay and Adams meet two months ago, and even though Clay despises Adams, some sort of deal was made. Clay did a lot of talking and bargaining to gain the support of 13 states for Adams, which was all he needed to win. This was all it took, Jackson was steadily in the lead, until something made several states change their minds. Adams won with 13 House votes, Jackson had 7, and Crawford had 4. After the election Adams made Clay his secretary of state, which is the conclusion has been made that Clay had something to do with this election. Clay even stated himself, "I cannot believe that the killing of 2,000 Englishmen at New Orleans qualifies a person for the various difficult and complicated duties of the Presidency,” in reference to Jackson, which shows his true dislike for Jackson.

So there it is folks, though this election went from a deadlock to a surprising win, congratulations to Mr. President Adams!
