Bones Bones Bones

• Horses have 205 bones.

• Bones have three main functions: to support the horses’ body, protect its organs, and to produce white and red blood cells in the bone marrow.

• Bones are made up of 30% collagen and 70% bone salts; which make the bones hard and sturdy to support the weight of the horse, but still allows the bones to be flexible enough so they won’t shatter during movement.

• The bones of a horse are long, short, flat, or irregular.
- Long bones are used as levers for the muscles, and to support the horse while moving. (examples: humerus, tibia, femur)
- Short bones are like shock absorbers, they are less dense and spongy like. (examples: bones of the knee, hock and fetlock)
-Flat bones are sheets of bone that protect organs and enclose cavities such as the skull and ribs.
- Irregular bones are the bones of the vertebral column, which protect the central nervous system.
